The 3 steps to choose the perfect makeup base

Finding your ideal shade, achieving a matte and luminous finish, controlling shine, humidity and sweat and unifying the skin without creating a mask effect is not an impossible mission. Where do we start?

Finding the perfect makeup base for our skin seems to be one of the most difficult missions in the world of cosmetics. As can happen to us with the shampoo, our skin has unique characteristics and peculiarities that make not any product provide us with what we need, even if we buy them of high quality, and although our friend, our sister or our neighbor feel great .

Most of us continue to look for a foundation that gives us a matte or luminous finish, long-lasting, resistant to moisture and sweat and that keeps shine and hydration at bay for hours. However, it is common that, when we put makeup on, we feel that the makeup “weighs us down”, that, instead of hiding the lines of expression, it intensifies them or gives them a more cracked effect, that we have to touch it up throughout the day or that we feel “disguised” under a tone that does not blend well with our undertone.

So let’s start with the basic principle: finding the perfect color for our makeup base so that our face, neck and neckline become a single canvas with a professional finish . To achieve this, we refer to the method of  Luis Casco, Mary Kay’s Global Beauty Ambassador , who advises us that “knowing your undertone helps you choose the correct shade of foundation.”

MaryKay’s new TimeWise® 3D ™ foundations   were precisely the winners of the Best Makeup of the Year category  at the IV Objective Well-being Awards . We have fallen in love with this 12-hour product , with a wide range of natural shades to choose from, which also provide us with anti-aging ingredients for our skin (they contain encapsulated resveratrol, vitamin B3 that works as an illuminator and antioxidant and a peptide that anti aging).

According to Casco, we can find the perfect makeup tone by following three simple steps:

1- Identify your skin tone

Professional makeup artists distinguish between three main types of skin tones : light tone, or Ivory, medium tone, or beige, and dark tone, or bronze.

2- Identify your skin undertone

We can also distinguish between three more skin tones , which we can identify by observing how our face reacts to the sun:

  • If our skin is easily burned or reddened, our undertone is  cold .
  • If it almost never burns and the tone intensifies in the sun, our undertone is  warm .
  • If we are between these two options, our undertone is probably  neutral .

3- Do a test of stripes on the chin

Once you have determined your tone and your undertone, select the color that you think is yours, as well as a lighter and a darker one.

Then, put a strip of each of the shades on the face, from the cheek to the neck, following the same method that you usually use, either using a brush, a sponge or the fingertips, in order to achieve the coverage that you want.

Finally, let the shades dry and choose the one that completely blends in with your skin, neck and décolleté and that unifies your skin tone without creating a mask effect.
